The aim of this study was to identify and determine different breadths of riparian forests and areas for the protection of spring on farms producing irrigated rice in order to quantify the economic losses by reducing the usable area for rice production in the Ribeirão Gustavo Watershed, municipality of Massaranduba, SC, Brazil. Four breadths of riparian forests (5, 15, 30 and 35 meters) and an area for the protection of springs of 50 meters were evaluated. The evaluations included 68 farms around the watershed. The results indicated that most farms have total area ranging from 10 to 20 ha, and only two farms had more than 50 ha. In about 60% of farms assessed, the area of irrigated rice occupies more than half of the total area, highlighting the importance of the activity in the watershed. Considering a breadth of 35 meters of protection over the water courses, areas of protection of irrigated rice would reduce from 20 to 50% in 31 farms; in ten of them there would be a reduction of more than half the area used for the culture, while in another 3 farms, there would be no reduction in the area. In the breadth of 5 meters of protection, most farms had reductions below 10% of the area of irrigated rice. The biggest economic losses due to the area of protection would be between US |
